Head of High Growth and Entrepreneurs, Barclays
Juliet Rogan leads a national team of High Growth Relationship Directors focused on supporting companies to scale from start-up to exit. Over the last six years Juliet has worked across Barclays Corporate and Investment bank, specialising in the Tech Media and Telecoms Sector and played an integral role in building Barclays’ high growth franchise and venture debt product. Previously Director for Barclays’ Technology, Media and Telecoms team, Juliet joined Barclays in 2010 after qualifying as an accountant at KPMG.
Stian Westlake is an expert on innovation, technology and government policy. He previously worked as Adviser to three UK Science Ministers, and prior to that spent eight years as an Executive Director of Nesta – the UK’s national foundation for innovation, where he led the organisation’s think-tank. Before his role at Nesta, Stian worked in social investment at The Young Foundation and as a consultant at McKinsey & Company in Silicon Valley and London. He is co-author of the critically acclaimed book ‘Capitalism Without Capital: the rise of the Intangible Economy’ and is a governor of the National Institute for Economic and Social Research, a senior fellow of Nesta, and a visiting researcher at Imperial College London.
Paula Alessandro is solicitor to Queen Mary Innovation Ltd (QMI), the intellectual property commercialisation company of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). She joined QMI in 2016 after a successful career in investment banking during which time she also gained a MBA from Warwick Business School. As QMI’s lead counsel, Paula is responsible for all its legal and risk governance affairs which includes advising on commercialising university research through structures such as licences and venture capital funded spin-out companies.
Paula suggested creation of a Legal-Investor Forum to be able to discuss industry wide legal issues with other PraxisAuril members, this was welcomed by PraxisAuril who were pleased to launch the group in November 2017.
Paula leads and facilitates the Legal & Investor Forum (operated via JISC-mail, a model), arising out of which, an Investment Agreement Working Group was developed, which Paula Co-Chairs together with Mark Anderson of Anderson Law. The Investment Working Group is working closely with investors, university partners and transactional lawyers to create a shareholders’ agreement term sheet to facilitate technology transfer transactions and help grow this sizeable market in higher education which is recognised as a trillion dollar industry by market-leading consultants.
